Going Local: Investing in U.S. Manufacturing, Region by Region
This Brookings blog post discusses the Obama Administration's new Investing in Manufacturing Communities Partnership, which will back coordinated, sustainable investment in advanced manufacturing in U.S. localities. Aside from the welcome financial support, a cornerstone of this initiative is its recognition of the emphatically regional underpinnings of U.S. manufacturing. All industries tend to reach critical mass in certain places; firms cluster together to tap into their community's infrastructure, institutions, and human capital. By collaborating with regulators to bolster the density, efficiency, and vitality of their local clusters, U.S. regions can stir the nation's overall macroeconomic competitiveness and growth. More
NADO/EDA May 2013 webinar on the U.S. Cluster Mapping website
On May 2, 2013, the National Association of Development Organizations and U.S. Economic Development Administration hosted a webinar on the newest version of the U.S. Cluster Mapping website, delving into its data, charting, and organization registry functions. It is the first in a series of workshops to be released throughout the year that will provide an overview of some of the economic analysis tools currently being funded by the EDA. Economic development organizations, policymakers, and other stakeholders can take a look at the video or slides available here to see how our website can supplement their regional planning and efforts. New Resources: Updates on South Carolina automotives and New Jersey clusters
Two recent reports have just been added to the Cluster Specific Initiatives resource library. One NADO report discusses the breadth and depth of South Carolina's automotive cluster. While its impact on the state economy may seem obvious with the presence of BMW and Michelin manufacturing plants, the auto cluster has expanded in R&D to become a major driver of South Carolina's growth. Another report from the NJ Chamber of Commerce and PlanSmart NJ details how state infrastructure and investment play a critical role in the economic development and prosperity of clusters. More
